Sentences & syntax Cleft structures
English is very rich in cleft structures. They are used to shift the focus to the beginning of the sentence. They can start with various introductions:
It's the people who make this place so interesting.
What I enjoy most is people watching.
This is what the canal looks like today.
The thing I like most is the food here.
Unlike the regular intonation in English the cleft structured sentences go sort of down - up - down:
What I'm going to do now is have a coffee.
